Kandy, the last capital of the Sri Lankan kings is the 3rd largest capital
in Sri Lanka. Named as a World Heritage Site, the name Kandy conjures visions
of splendor and magnificence. Many of the legends, traditions and folklore are
still lovingly kept alive. The “Esela Maha Perahera” (Procession) is one of the
biggest events held in Kandy annually and one of the most spectacular pageants
in South Asia. During this Perahera or the Procession, the gold casket in which
the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha is enshrined is exposed to the public.
The casket is carried by a magnificent tusked temple elephant adorned with
colorful cloth lined with electric bulbs. Over 100 elephants ranging from majestic
bulls to half grown calves take part in this procession. The Kandyan dancers,
devil dancers, whip crackers, stick dancers, costumed dancers and an
assortment of acrobats and flame dancers also participate in this event.
